Sumba Island is home to one of the world’s most dramatic terrains, crisp and untouched beaches, and, of course, Cap Karoso Resort, meaning “Cape of Indian Almond Trees”. Here, luxury design flawlessly melts into the surrounding wild environment on the shores of a coral reef, scattered between turquoise lagoons and traditional Sumbanese villages.

Sumba is the ideal island to visit if you’re keen on wellness, spirituality, and learning the local culture, which includes the unique religion, Marapu, dating back to the Bronze Age. Explore indigenous art, megalithic tombs, and traditional houses said to be built to reach the spirit world.

Sustainable Island Living

Heritage Meets High-End Wellness at Cap Karoso Resort

Cap Karoso’s architects and founders were sure to be mindful of the local ecosystem and climate, having selected specific crops that fill the needs of the resort without disturbing the natural elements. Additionally, natural fertiliser produced by the local buffaloes is used, ensuring high-quality, organic produce.

To give back to the local community, the farm hosts a training program aimed at adequately equipping locals with skills in landscaping and farming. This includes plant propagation, organic farming, and permaculture. Additionally, through their Sumba Food Festival, a portion of each event directly supports local initiatives that ensure clean water access, food entrepreneurship, and education.

Cap Karoso was built with the intention of preserving the delicate local landscape, including rehabilitating parts of it. Cap Karoso’s sustainability efforts include removing non-indigenous plant species and introducing an eco-friendly water treatment system. The resort now sources half of its energy from an on-site solar park, avoids plastic packaging entirely, and minimises food waste through a circular system that feeds leftovers to farm animals.

Wellness Rooted in Nature and Culture

Heritage Meets High-End Wellness at Cap Karoso Resort

Naturally, wellness is central to the Cap Karoso experience. Start your day with yoga and meditation on the beach in the pavilion guided by a Sumbanese teacher. Each class applies the traditional Sumbanese disciplines and local ancestral wisdom to the modern-day stressors you need to release. Continue to relax at the Malala Spa in a traditional Sumbanese house with treatments inspired by ancient shamanic healing techniques. Of course, the botanicals, herbs, and oils used are sourced directly from Cap Karoso’s farm or nearby villages; a pure Sumbanese experience.

Adjacent to the spa, you can break a sweat in the gym while enjoying the view of the Indian Ocean. The gym is fully equipped with all the fitness machinery required to break a sweat.

Farm to Table: The Flavour of Sumba

Heritage Meets High-End Wellness at Cap Karoso Resort

Having hosted the first Sumba Food Festival in October 2025, which included the talents of ten celebrated chefs from across the Asia-Pacific, it’s clear that the Flame of Flavour of Sumba has been ignited. Fortunately, you can experience the essence of this flame year-round at Cap Karoso.

In the early days, the land at Cap Karoso was given new life with fertile soil wherein organic gardens now grow, allowing for a far wider selection of fruits and vegetables to feature in your meals. Three restaurants offer a variety of cuisine. From fresh, ultra-local seafood to French fine dining and modernised Eastern Indonesian dishes, enjoyed by the pool. Each restaurant presents a feast, not only for the eyes, but also for the soul.

The Beach Club uses the permaculture farm’s fresh ingredients, as well as ultra-local fish, to construct French-Indonesian-inspired dishes. Julang offers an intimate 20-guest dinner-only experience, serving culinary art by renowned, sometimes Michelin-starred chefs, who have fleeting but punctuating residences. Finally, Apicine boasts a curated menu of Eastern Indonesian dishes with contemporary flair, enjoyed alongside the pool and ocean views.

What are the accommodation options? Are they private?

The resort offers studio suites and villas ranging from 2-bedroom to 3-bedroom, each with a private pool all to yourself. A number of the spaces include a terrace or direct beach access, all of which emphasise indoor-outdoor living. If you’d prefer supreme privacy, the villas would be ideal, especially for families and groups.

Would you say Cap Karoso is focused on sustainability, community engagement, and authenticity?

Absolutely! One example is their sustainability in food practices, producing their own produce on their three-hectare farm in combination with local produce, and mindful water and power usage. The resort further engages with local villages that offer guided tours to incorporate the local culture more deeply.

Are there any additional factors to consider?

Cap Karoso is remote and highly exclusive, so your trip will need to be expertly planned ahead of your departure, which YOLO Travel can professionally plan for you.
